en nyckelharpa i stugan

My name is Torbjörn Näsbom and I'm a nyckelharpa player.

Born and raised in the province of Uppland, I learned to play the fiddle from my father. Even when I was young I had the privilege of meeting great figures like Eric Sahlström and Viksta-Lasse.

Later I started to train as a classical violinist, at among other places the Swedish Radio college of music at Edsbergs Castle and the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. When I'd finished studying I started work with the Umeå Symphony Orchestra at Norrlands Opera, and it was there I started to play the nyckelharpa, or key-fiddle. At first it was in a pleasant and controlled way, but as time went on it became more and more of a dependency.

Of course I play folk music, but I've also explored how the nyckelharpa works with classical music, and above all baroque music.

I've performed as soloist with Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Drottningholms Baroque Ensemble, Umeå Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra and Stockholms Baroque Orchestra and others.

I've also toured with Ann-Sofi von Otter in various parts of Europe and the USA.

I play a lot with the fantastic bass-player Sebastian Dubé with whom I recorded the CD called "Vatten", 'Water', described in these pages.
